It’s with mixed emotions that I announce that today, Basketball City (BBC) will close its doors for the last time at its current location. BBC has been a staple in our community since 1991, founded by my good friend, Gary Rager. I spent my late teens here, first as a player, and later managing Gary's second location with my best friend, Danny Patrona Jr. At the time, I never imagined that I’d someday have the chance to own this place, but when the opportunity came, it was a no-brainer.
I am incredibly grateful to all the people who’ve made this journey possible. From the players, coaches, and families, to everyone who’s supported us over the years—YOU are the reason BBC has thrived for so long. We outlasted so many other facilities because we put people first, and that will always be our legacy.
While the open gym at BBC will cease, the future of the building remains bright. Starting August 1, 2025, it will become the new home of the Fraser Soccer Club, a group that has been serving youth soccer families since the 1970s. I have no doubt they’ll continue the great work we’ve started.
As for me, though the basketball facility will close, my journey isn’t over. I’ll be continuing my work with Midwest Athletics, hosting my annual D-leagues (now in their 18th year), offering team play with MWA Elite, and running youth camps with the Grosse Pointe Lakers.
Thank you, BBC, for the memories, the friendships, and the lasting impact on so many lives.
